Google revised an advertisement for its prominent artificial intelligence software, Gemini, after inaccurately stating the global demand for Gouda cheese.
Originally intended for the Super Bowl, the commercial aimed to highlight Gemini’s capabilities. It depicted the AI assisting a cheesemonger in Wisconsin in crafting a product description, incorrectly stating that Gouda represented 50 to 60 percent of global cheese consumption.
However, a blogger highlighted on X that this claim was "unequivocally false", as Gouda is not as popular as indicated.
According to the blogger, Gemini relies on information from the web - users can always verify the results and sources.
After rectifying the error in the ad, Google issued a statement to the BBC, explaining that they revised the content based on feedback received from the cheesemonger in the ad. The statement further shared, Following his recommendation to remove the inaccurate statistic from the product description, we updated the user interface to align with the business's actions.
This episode is a source of embarrassment for Google, especially due to the high visibility of the Super Bowl and the meticulous scrutiny advertisements face during the event. While this incident involving Gouda is not the first challenge encountered by Google in relation to its AI products, it is notable. Interesting to note, Google has previously encountered difficulties related to cheese, as evident in the past.
Moreover, Google’s AI-generated responses once suggested that geologists recommend humans consume a rock daily, adding to the quirkiness of their tech missteps. Notably, ads showcased at the Super Bowl are no strangers to controversy in their own right.
