ZURICH, Jan 29 (Reuters) - The Swiss government approved new climate targets on Wednesday, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels.

Switzerland's efforts to address global warming faced scrutiny last year following a European court ruling that the country was not adequately addressing climate change.

The government stated that the new goals, aligned with the Paris Agreement, will focus primarily on implementing domestic measures.

By 2035, Switzerland aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% from 1990 levels, and by an average of 59% between 2031 and 2035, the statement read.

Previously, Switzerland had committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 from 1990 levels.

The Swiss cabinet announced the adoption of an amendment to its long-term climate strategy and planned to submit the new proposals to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change by Feb. 10.

In its submission, Switzerland will highlight the role of renewable energies in achieving climate neutrality, added the cabinet.
