BERLIN, Feb 7 (Reuters) - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed interest in launching a Stargate-like artificial intelligence program in Europe during a panel discussion at the Technical University of Berlin. Altman stated his company's eagerness to introduce a "Stargate Europe."

Stargate, a U.S. initiative endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump, is supported by entities such as OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle, with plans to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure over the next five years.

Altman emphasized the importance of European involvement in setting the rules for AI technology, stating, We'll obviously comply with whatever they are. He highlighted the benefits of Europe embracing AI to avoid falling behind globally in this technology.

To further their expansion in Europe, OpenAI disclosed plans to establish a new office in Munich, Germany. Altman stated, Opening our first office in Germany means we can help even more people, businesses, and institutions benefit from AI's possibilities.

OpenAI's European presence has grown in recent years with the announcement of offices in Dublin and London in 2023, followed by two more in Paris and Brussels in 2024.

Altman is scheduled to participate in an AI summit in Paris on Monday, alongside various European heads of state and government officials.
